Photographer's Note

A taxi driver in Juneau had told us that whales don't breach in Alaska. How wrong he was. On one evening on our small ship cruise we came to where Frederick Sound meets Chatham Strait. The sun was low and we'd finished our dinner when we came across a large group of Humpback Whales.
Initially they were just splashing their fins and diving but after a while as the sun sank lower some started to breach.
This photo isn't brilliantly sharp as I was using my travel 28-300mm lens on maximum zoom on ISO 3200 but it did manage to capture the sun shining through the water splashing off the whale. I've come across few more magical sights.
The image was quite noisy in the hills and sky so I used Nik Dfine to smooth those parts a bit.

Best in the large view.
