Photographer's Note

Last time I checked, University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) was ranked the 13th best university in the world. But in this note I would like to write about the location of its campus. Its northern border runs along famous Sunset Boulevard. If you follow this road to the east after 5 minutes of driving you arrive at late Michel Jackson’s house. To the north east UCLA borders Beverly Hills. Playboy Mansion is in a walking distance (30 min by foot). Even though administratively the campus is in (West) Los Angeles, if you would like to drive from the campus to LA downtown in a straight line you would pass next to the most famous Beverly Hills street: Rodeo Drive, and shortly after that West Hollywood, the gay capital of Southern California. North of the campus there is Bel Air, and to the west: Brentwood, two other very expensive neighbourhoods. To the south there is a picturesque Westwood. Downtown LA is 24 min by car. The closest beach Santa Monica: 15 min. Pacific Palisades, where you can meet former governor of California, Schwarzenegger, 16 min. Malibu is 40 min away, but this is still a short distance for Californian standards. You can imagine this location has an impact on the demographics of the campus. It has quite a different character from University of Southern California (USC), which is located in poor and dangerous downtown.

In this picture you see the entrance to Moore Hall, housing UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. Similarly to the whole neighbourhood (Westwood) in which it is located, the campus has a very impressive landscaping. Walking around feels like visiting a botanical garden. Last time I have seen Westwood in Quentin Tarantino’s movie “Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood” (2019).
