Monument valley, a photo from Utah, West

Photographer's Note

La Monument Valley è un'icona degli Stati Uniti occidentali. Il pianoro desertico è in realtà di origine fluviale (Colorado Plateau) e si trova al confine tra Utah e Arizona in un'area abbastanza isolata quanto estesa che dista più di 70 km dalla cittadina più vicina: Kayenta. La strada che conduce alla Monument Valley nella parte terminale è altrettanto famosa: essa segue un percorso rettilineo in leggera discesa che dà al viaggiatore l'impressione di calarsi all'interno della valle. La strada principale che conduce al luogo è la Highway 163. Il territorio è prevalentemente pianeggiante ad eccezione del fatto che la pianura è cosparsa da una sorta di guglie dette butte o mesas. Questi edifici naturali formati da roccia e sabbia hanno la forma di torri dal colore rossastro (causato dall'ossido di ferro) con la sommità piatta più o meno orizzontale; alla base si accumulano detriti composti da pietrisco e sabbia.
La zona fa parte della Navajo Nation Reservation ed è un Tribal Park con ingresso a pagamento. Gli indiani gestiscono tutte le attività all'interno della valle compreso il discusso e costoso View hotel inaugurato nel 2009 costruito sul posto dell'essenziale campeggio che esisteva da 40 anni. Li e al vicino Visitor center si possono contrattare le escursioni in jeep, che è possibile in una certa misura effettuare con il proprio veicolo e si trovano una discreta quantità di bancarelle sulle quali i Navajo vendono le loro manifatture, in particolare gioielli.
Non è raro incontrare un set cinematografico durante la visita lungo le numerose strade sterrate che percorrono la valle infatti il luogo fa spesso da ambientazione a film western come in passato.

Long time back, I made a brief visit here and your photo is bringing back the memories.Beautiful valley under the cloudy skies. The colors and sharpness are superb. I see people enjoying having photos taken in front of the valley. They also give us the idea about the size of the monument.

bellissima scenografia da film western, è veramente interessante notare i diversi livelli di erosione dell'acqua ed il colore ferrugginoso di queste rocce. Hai fatto molto bene ad arricchire l'immagine con la presenza delle persone, non solo perchè danno vita alla scena, ma anche perchè ci danno l'esatta dimensione del luogo. La qualità fotografica, specialmente la nitidezza, sono perfetti, come ormai ci hai abituati. Complimenti!

La foto é splendida e, ovviamente, conoscendo assai bene il luogo, non mi stupisco della sua grandiosità. Ti chiedo solo se ce la fai a vedere, come me, le facce, che sono parecchie, incise naturalmente nella roccia. Non ti voglio mettere in imbarazzo e te ne cito soltanto due. Da sinistra verso il centro: un indiano di profilo, molto triste. Poco dopo un matto che ride. E ti risparmio il vecchio con la barba e un libro in mano...Ce la fai, Peppe??

yes, looking at this we can certainly see the reason why this is the area where the movies are filmed...it would suit the scene well.
hard to control the lighting here, as its so easy to overexpose the rock formations.
adding the people give a sense of scale and granduer.

As I look at this photo of you, I'm going back to my childhood, when I watched John Wayne, Gary Cooper,Charles Bronson, Gregory Peck and many other western heroes.
I much prefer the films but also any landscape here we do not have.
Very nice photo with beautiful natural colors.
The presence of humans is very well used in this your work.
