Going Vertical, a photo from Utah, West

Photographer's Note

It was St. Patrick's day, and finding something green this early in spring in red rock country was difficult. But I did find some green spring grass. This location is near the entrance the the narrows river walk. The cliffs are absolutely vertical.

It is always charming to find an angle that is a little different. If I had been photographing with my view camera I would have held the perspective. So I tried to do so with my digital, but with PS in post processing.

I used a 10mm lens, so this is very wide coverage. I then correct the perspective for the monolithic face of sandstone to the left center so that it does not have converging lines of perspective at the top.

The sky was deep blue, and I did reduce the luminance of blue in LR.

Dana this picture is very nice and the place where you took it is very impressive. The long, vertical, smooth walls make for a serious challenge to any climber. Good exposure and sharpness in this image. Thanks for sharing.

awesome colors and play of shadows on the rockface...the blue sky and the gentle green of the grass even made the picture great...good job!

This is another fine addition to your gallery. I really like the low angle that accentuates the height of the rock spires. And the colors are very nice too. Great work and thanks for sharing. Gerald

I like how you corrected the perspective. I like the strength of the walls. Wish there was a foreground element to anchor them a little better. I'll have to try the technique out the next time I get a chance.

Dana, I can't help remembering Galen Rowell's Vertical Walls book when I see a picture like this. Because of your angle, compared to Rowell's, the verticals are not as steep. Beautiful, enough, though. How did you reduce the luminance of the blue in LR?
