Photographer's Note

A blue moon is the second full moon in a calendar month; it happens about 2 1/2 years - "once in a blue moon." And it's not blue.

Except in this photo, which I took last night in the North Beach section of San Francisco. (Technically, the blue moon - full moon - is tonight, but (1) it's supposed to rain tonight, so we won't be able to see it; (2) you often get a better full moon shot the day before, because it rises earlier and there's often a bit of sunlight left; and (3) the clouds here were kind of neat.)

This block of Green St. is full of bars and restaurants, and right now they're all lit up in preparation for tonight's New Year's Eve party. The wine bar on this block, dell'uva, is owned by my stepson; we were there last night, but tonight is going to be crowded and noisy and attractive to the younger set. Any of you who fit that description and are in town are welcome to drop in! Because I had had a glass of wine just before I took this shot, I wasn't sure I could hand-hold a slow one, and there was no convenient lamppost or car hood to use (I took this in the middle of the street), so I cranked up the ISO to 800, and cleaned up the noise in PP.

Happy 2010, everybody!
