Northern Minnesota in Winter Frost
Island Lake
North of Duluth Minnesota.

This is one of my favorite shooting locations along the edges of Island Lake (just north of Duluth) .. A small and empty gravel road that runs through the marshy edge of the lake with some nice views of the lake, marsh, and forest. This is the same shooting location as this image
and this image.

I took off on this morning for shooting in the forest north of town due to the frost. When I first moved to this area I was hoping that shooting hoar frost would be a beautiful and regular activity of my winters (due to the amount of humidity, fog, etc.) .. unfortunately what I have discovered is that typically it is too cold up here in the winter .. the severe cold just sucks the moisture out of the air and makes these conditions more unusual than I would like ..

The image has been converted to black and white .. but for 99.9% of the pixels in the image that is pretty much how the appeared on this morning .. I pulled the color out completely since the limited bits of color (in the reeds for example) seemed to distract more than help.

My favorite part of the image is the layer of tamarack in the center .. the tamarack is a deciduous conifer (the "needles" turn gold in the fall and drop for the winter) common in northern bogs (when I first moved here I thought .. what are all these sick yellow pines ????) .. anyway I love the way the tamarack carry the frost.
