Photographer's Note

The Chinese year 4707 (a Tiger year) starts on the 14th, but of course celebrations start before that and can last as long as 3 weeks. I expect I'll see some of them in San Francisco, but I thought I'd start with an old shot (I'm guessing it was 1975) that I took during Chinese New Year in New York City's Chinatown.

Here the crowd is watching a single lion dance performer dancing in the middle of the street to bring good luck to the stores and the people. All that red stuff is firecracker paper, and the smoke is from fireworks that have just exploded.

This is scanned from a slide, with noise reduction, a bit of cropping, and sharpening using High Pass on a duplicate layer set to Overlay blending mode.

Kung shi fa shoy / Gung hey fat choy / Chuk mung nam moy! (That's Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese. I don't swear to the accuracy of any of them.)
