Squirrels belong to a large family of rodent mammals small and medium known as Sciuridae. In Brazil, also known as squirrel, squirrel, caxinxe, catiaipé, quatimirim, coati or acutipuru. Squirrels are spread almost all over the world, mostly in temperate areas or tropical climates, but also in some areas with cold climates. Like all rodents, have very strong prey, how easily gnaw seeds, especially acorns.
The seeds are the main sources of food but also eat insects and fruit. When they collect food, some seeds that are buried, and some even sprout like pine nuts and coconuts, eventually planting and trees such as Araucaria jerivá.
They build nests of leaves and branches to shelter their young from rain and wind, branches very high in trees like cajarana. During pregnancy, the parents prepare the nest to receive the offspring, ranging from 30 to 10 per litter. As an adult, the largest species of the family come to the measure 53-73 cm in length (with tail).
