Photographer's Note

Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, California is most definitely an iconic photography destination. It's famous for this particular view where the setting sun's light shoots through a cave like opening of a large rock outcropping on to the beach. Late December and early January is the best time to visit due to the alignment of the sun and the opening which makes it popular with other photographers.

Hi Mike,
Great capture here. The effective use of shutter speed to allow some movement in the water but still capture the waves is well controlled. The golden light flooding through the portal is very well positioned with a great POV- were you getting wet here?

Hello Mike,as usual you have captured the drama of the scene perfectly.The dying suns rays on those turbulent waters and on the lone rock add great drama to a well planned and perfectly captured photograph.

A Difficult Picture - made to look simple and easy! Wao ! The life in the moving water is a contrast to the elusive but bright light from the opening…. The Composition is clever, in the sense that the photograph includes the sharp reflection of the golden light on the wet stone on the river. The next few rocks carries our vision to the right on the Black rocks, which again is in sharp contrast to the whit frothy water ….

Outstanding shot, Mike - really creative and well imagined. Nice use of a longer exposure, great POV, and the effect of the sun here just looks incredibly cool.
