Photographer's Note

This scene is nearly six years old, but I pulled up this shot as a PP exercise, trying to salvage an image and convey the intensity and athleticism of roller derby. The lighting in this hall was not bright and the action was very fast. If I set the shutter for a proper exposure, all details were lost in a blur. If I set the shutter fast enough not to blur, the scene was underexposed and the sense of motion was lost. This frame was one of the few that split the difference with more or less success. Even at that, it has taken a lot (too much? you tell me!) of PP to present an image that will allow the viewer to easily discern the details.

This was an 8-team flat-track national championship tournament. Here, Kansas City (in red) and New York (in black) compete. Kansas City won the tournament, despite being one of the two lowest seeded teams.

Austin, of course, also has banked-track derby. I enjoy both!
