Zabriskie Point Sunset, a photo from California, West

Photographer's Note

The landscape in Death Valley look relatively plain from a distance with mostly brownish arid landscape, but there are many wonderful surprises when you are closer up. and many of the place are very surreal and almost not of this world.

This is our first stop at Death Valley on our recent trip in past weekend. We arrive just in time for sunset. Zabriskie Point is a part of Amargosa Range located east of Death Valley. its erosional landscape is composed of sediments from Furnace Creek Lake, which dried up 5 million years ago—long before Death Valley came into existence. It is surreal in many ways with it colorful geology and shape, but with such colorful sunset, it makes it seem even more surreal but beautiful.

I remember seeingh the movie called "Zabriskie Point", fimed in 1967 on the very same hills. Saw it again few years ago, but was not so enthusiastic about...

I love old italian pictures and this is for sure, as Ike said, the name of Antonioni´s one, must have been turned in that place
Quite agree with you about rocks and colors, having never go there all are similar
Here because of sunset, the colors help to create this well organiced capture with the far away blue mountains at the back along with a silky sky

Hello Way,
Like others I saw that movie by Antonioni. I have no memories of the story, but the remarkable sceneries have stayed with me, although vaguely, for decades. This is really one of those surreal landscapes, looking like another planet, that you seem to be collecting. The photo is first class, with excellently handled light and colors.

Hello Way, Again in Death Valley? Amazing view of Zabriskie Point in sunset. It looks surreal indeed. Marvelous colours and shapes. I was also there during sunset (and after that quite a long trip to Las Vegas) but I had no success with a photo. Fascinating place and great presentation.

Having similar landscapes in Arizona, I fully understand your point about deceptive detail from afar. My oh my, both you and nature have painted some kind of gorgeous artmosphere...yes, I spelled that just the way I intended! :)

The distant range and colorful sunset could have stood on its own, but the inclusion of these fascinating foreground formations is indeed, artwork! Such a rustic rainbow of color, one element complimenting the next, it really is quite attractive and alluring. I could go on and on about technical detail, but the soothing mood is the real winner here. Beauty shot my friend! Take it easy.

I missed seeing this when I was in California so thanks for sharing. A superb sunset with good warm cold color contrasts between the hazy bg blue peaks and the yellow orange colors of the sunset. Nice textural and tonal details as well as repetition of patterns and shapes in the desolate looking fg. Have a great Sunday!

I love the soft low light here, which really is your specialty. The Rules of Thirds framing is superb, as are the rich colours of this desolate valley, which from your valley really earns its name. It's pretty useless commenting on the technical aspects of your photos, as they're flawless, so as I do with Andre's photos, I just concentrate on what emotions they evoke. And here they evoke a sense of wonder - and relief - that despite what our governments and Big Business are doing to the Earth, that there are still these untouched, pristine corners.

another wonderful landscape. Living on the west coast, i should make it down here at some point. Hopefully death valley isnt as restrictive as some of the other parks inthe west US.

this is a spectacular view. You were in the great location at the perfect timing and you have very well used the opportunity. The exposure so challenging was realized perfectly. I had a pleasure to be in this POV once but the light was not optimal. It seems indeed more like an illustration for a sci-fi book like Lord of the Rings or something.

The topography and landscape is amazing. This place has been made famous thanks to the movie of the same name and the music by Pink Floyd.
The formations are indeed surreal...we have a 'moonscape' landscape in Ladakh, which is also formed where there was a lake eons ago..
