Photographer's Note

This sign can be seen for many miles in the east vally outside of Phoenix, Arizona. Located on usery pass mountain. This sign is cared for since the 1950s by local scouting troops. Each letter is about 12 ft wide, 100 feet tall, with the entire sign being 1000 ft long. It was originally constructed as an air marker for aircraft heading to the Phoenix area. Without GPS, or a navigator, the desert looks pretty much the same for hundreds of miles in any direction. I remember seeing it in the early 80s before I moved to Apache Junction in 1991.
