Photographer's Note

Located between Green River and Fremont Junction, San Rafael Reef, a 30-mile-long stone barrier, a saw-toothed ridge at the eastern edge of nowhere. For centuries, only the most intrepid travelers found their way through its narrow slot canyons and on to the Green River crossing. The early Spanish explorers detoured 20 miles north to avoid the forbidding wall. In 1883 the Denver and Rio Grand Railroad also avoided breaching the Reef, laying track just east of its sheer walls, north to Salt Lake City. In 1957 the decision was made to increase the nation's interstate highway system and I-70 was engineered to bisect the San Rafael Swell. Construction begin in October 1967 at Spotted Wolf Canyon. Engineers and surveyors used body harnesses and ropes to work as high as 400 feet above the canyon floor. Crews excavated 3.5 million cubic yards of rock from the area at a cost of $4.5 million for eight miles of road. On November 5, 1970, the Utah Department of Transportation opened the 70-mile section from Fremont Junction to Green River for two-lane traffic. Two more lanes were added in the mid-1980.

I love the PoV and your compo here but, due to my current problem with ... my poor eyes, I prefer to see it under softer light with the pair of sun-glasses in front of the lens. Hope you won't mind the version I tried to make my eyes smiling!

I love this photo Phuoc and a very interesting note. The striations on the rocks are echoed by the markings on the road, which is well included to show the scale. Good POV and composition. I agree with you the WS is too green; this red rock is typical of Utah.

Great photo. I like the camera positioning to make the road visible yet partly hidden. But it is too contrasty to my taste - however it may turn out real nice in b/w.

Wow I can see you took this from an amazing vantage point. Those vehicles seem so small and I love how you caught the narrow channel and the wide open space in the distant.

This is very nicely done Phuoc with fine colors and excellent sharpness. My initial reaction is that I'd like a bit more of the road showing at the lower right hand corner, though there may be practical reasons for cropping at this point. That got me thinking about the whole composition. In a way, the curving road with trucks present is the central feature of this composition, framed by the glorious rocks at both side and in the distance. That motivated me to think differently about the composition and to create a workshop showing an alternative approach. I like your work here, but check out the workshop to see whether this alternative suits your taste as well. Sometimes, less IS more... ;-)
