Photographer's Note
My travelogue "Wild Hawaii" starts on Waikiki Beach on the island of Oahu, which is neither my favorite spot nor particularly wild. It is however the best known and most popular spot in Hawaii, therefore a good place to start. This is also where the first of the misconceptions that accompanied me to Hawaii were proven wrong: it is not hot and it is not too crowded, not even during the busy winter break. The temperature is pleasant day and night, the air is not too humid and a fresh breeze that occasionally transforms in moderate gale keeps the weather interesting. The picture was taken at the very end of Waikiki Beach, which was obviously not very crowded, and one could easily walk from one end of the beach to the other without stepping over towels. A place where you can lay on the sand, swim, pretend to be surfing, snorkel among sea turtles or admire the sunset next to a Mai Tai, all within two minutes from your hotel. It has the typical relaxed tourist resort atmosphere; no one seems to be in a hurry, no one is rude. Yes, you do have to pay for it and the waterfront hotels are not inexpensive. However, a delicious ahi tuna or mahi mahi lunch right by the beach costs $10-15. It wouldn’t cost much less in the city where I live. I didn’t fall in love with this place, but I have much more understanding now for the numerous people who do.
The picture was taken from the vicinity of the Kapiolani Park towards the Waikiki waterfront hotels - probably all the visible buildings are hotels.

Hello Roland,
Amazing photo of a place I really want to visit in the next couple of year. Waikiki beach looks so beautiful. I like how you included a big part of the beach, the waves rolling in and the view over the city buildings in the distance. The angle you have taken it from really leads the viewer into the picture. Great composition, beautiful colors and well captured.

Lucky guy - visiting Hawaii while many of us are stuck back in rain and snow! Although this is a major city, it shows the raw natural beauty that makes this place so attractive. I like the way this shot builds from left to right, getting higher and lighter. Well done!

Hi Roland - I cannot top the uniqueness of the first critique for this photo, but I'll just say the combination of ocean, wet sand, clouds and buildings (however unattractive) look phenomenal, excellent low light
