Today I begin a series on California Public Transportation.
Most Americans can't live without a car. Most people in San Diego, in California, in the whole USA, they use private automobile, on the good network of freeways, highways, and major roads. Indeed, California offers a comprehensive collection of highways and millions of people use cars everyday.
But, contrary to some belief in Europe, there is the option of public transportation, at least in some cities. However, almost only the poorest people use public transportation.
San Diego has a good network of public transportation: bus (city and county network, and the long distance Greyhound), trolley (light train), trains (Coaster and Amtrak) and ferryboat across the bay. Furthermore, you can carry your bike on public transportation without extra ticket.
The city and county transportation (bus, trolley and coaster/commuter rail) is organized by the MTS - Metropolitan Transit System. My preferred in San Diego city and surrounding areas is the trolley (a light train, like a surface metro in some other cities). The San Diego Trolley offers services in three regular routes: Blue Line, from Qualcomm Stadium or Old Town Station to San Ysidro/Tijuana (on the border with Mexico, via National City, Chula Vista and Imperial Beach); Orange Line, from Downtown to Gillespie Field (via Lemon Grove, La Mesa and El Cajon); and Green Line, from Old Town to Santee (via Mission Valley and El Cajon).
This picture shows a trolley near the Convention Center Station (it begins at the top right corner), on the Orange Line, in the Downtow area. To the left side of the line, the walkway is the Martin Luther King Jr Promenade. The photo was taken from the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the biggest hotel in San Diego, with two towers which are among the tallest of the Downtown skyscrapers. I've got this view from the top of the 40 stories of the southern tower (Harbor Tower, in the "Top of the Hyatt" bar). It is the tallest skyscraper on my photo San Diego Biking. See in the workshop the hotel (in color) and the direction of the view (red arrow).
The San Diego Trolley Light Rail vehicles are made by Siemens.
Please read also the notes and see of the photos of this series / theme.
