Seal Spa: Farallon Islands, a photo from California, West

Seals enjoying the surf at the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
These islands are in the Pacific Ocean about 30 miles west of San Francisco. Multiple islands totalling 217 acres are home to perhaps the largest bird colony in the lower 48 states.

It took an all-day boat trip to visit the islands and look for whales. We are not allowed to go on land, but the views from the boat were great, and were more visually interesting than the whales we saw.

Great trip, and highly recommended if you ever make it to San Francsico.

Hello Alan,

What a compelling shot! I was a postdoc at UCal-Berkeley many years ago. I remember a scene evocative of this at Seal Rock. But your shot is far beyond anything I saw there. The composition, colors and exposure are all first rate.

Hi Alan,
I like the composition here and the delicate different tones of blue colour. May be would be better if the seals were more zoomed (and in this way - more remarkable).
Otherwise is good marine picture

j'aime beaucoup cette scène un peu cocasse.
Beaucoup de fraicheur.
Et surtout plein de vie et de mouvement.
Une photo comme on ne voit pas souvent.

The blue here is gorgeous. On days without fog I look at the islands and wonder waht it would be like to just wonder there.
The seals poking though are great, and the water cascading down the srocks is great.

Très belle cette scène. Grace à la note j'ai appris que ce que je croyais être des rochers étaient des phoques.
Belle lumière, beau cadrage.
