Photographer's Note

A warm early autumn morning lent itself to a reflective hike along the Fox River across from the Thilmany Paper Mill. Here in an area that has the world's largest concentration of paper mills, it's another example of the co-existence of man and nature along a working river. Thilmany continues to be a significant employer in both this city and the surrounding area.

The history goes back to the 19th century, where, according to local lore, the original Mr. Thilmany once took on the War Department, which then had jurisdiction over the river because it was part of a strategic interior water route to the Mississippi and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. Thilmany reportedly bucked restrictions on water usage and defied the government to tell him differently.
