Photographer's Note
A slightly different photo from me today, but I couldn't resist bringing my camera along to the biggest sporting event in Western Australia, being the Western Derby.
Twice a year the two Perth teams, Fremantle Dockers and the West Coast Eagles of Australian Rules Football battle it out for bragging rights in Perth, and today the better team, and most importantly my team, Fremantle Dockers, won the game in a nailbiting finish by 5 points.
For people that aren't familiar with the sport, Aussie Rules was created to keep cricket players fit during the off-season in the mid 1800's. Although nobody is exactly sure of the origins, most people generally agree that the rules came from a mixture of both Gaelic Football from Ireland, and Rugby. Most season games attract around 40,000 people, and the Grand Final which decides the premiership team, attracts 100,000 people to the game each year.

Hi Brendan. Of course we're used to an overload of sporting images in the papers, etc., but I really like this image, there's something different about it. The players seem finely-balanced, almost elegant here (despite the snarl on one's face.) A very interesting photo, well done! Ryno

This is a really good dynamic Aussie Rules shot, Brendan. The light and the colours are great, and I like the diagonal created by the three players. The plain green background allows a nice uncluttered composition. And I know how you feel - the Demons have had four close ones in a row!

Talk about a 'moment captured' - this is superb! We get to see a fair bit of Aussie Rules here in Ireland, it's shown on tv & of course there's the annual 'Compromise Rules' games between Ireland (Gaelic Football) & Australia.
This is just brilliant, the expressions on their faces, the framing, colours, everything. Very dyanamic image, well done.

So that's how the Dockers did it - two on one. That doesn't look like Juddy in the middle, but I'm trying to work out who. Anyway, it's a very clear and colourful image, ball or no ball.
Regards, from another Demon. Expecting to give Freo a bollocking next Saturday.

Fantastic, gripping action shot of what has to be the most toughest sport in the entire world. The key for me is the player in the middle, caught between the enemy - really shows the spirit of this sport. The different levels of the players faces, coming down at an angle kind of shapes the compo as well. Thanks for sharing!

Two on one, comoooon that is not a fairplay!! lol
This wont happen in Slovakia, here exists just one rule - all for 1 and 1 for all :))
kidding..
Great action shot Brendan and allthought i like much more "gaelic football" which is played here, your picture is just perfect!

Hi Brendan,
Were you on the grass to get so close picture with the 50mm !! Surprising!
Very nice image, dynamique. Very nice the way the bodies and attitudes fill the diagionale giving even more force to the shot.

you didnt get that with your 50mm lens did you??? that seems quite incredible.
i particularly dislike aussie rules mate ... it's what they play in victoria. i'm a league and union boy ... when i'm not following soccer of course!
despite that, the colours are great. really nice saturation and you've caught a brilliant moment of tension between the players.
great shot.

Hi Brendan,
excellent action shot, you've captured a great moment here.
Oh, 50 mm, you're very close !
The green is an excellent background, ideal for the contrast with the violet equipment.
Well done

Heheh - surely not 50mm. They don't let you onto the grounds for matches, and you'd want to be more than 80cm away from this action...
Well captured!

Hi Brendan,
Great action pic, nicely timed and captured and with perfect colours and clarity. And not a football in sight! ;-)
Best wishes,

Hi Brendan
This makes me laugh. I don't often see photos of Aussie rules here and hardly ever on TV. My brother-in-law has Spanish cable TV and they broadcast Aussie rules matches but put their Spanish commentary to it. Hilarious.
Anyway, your photo is an excellent action shot and shows how entertaining the sport is. Nice tight framing.

in addition to this being a good action shot is has very good composition. The diangnal fromed by the three guys is well seen. the eye is led down from the top all the way to the bottom and along the way the poor guy in the middle is really getting worked.
really well seen

Great moment of action. I guess we both had a sports theme this time. I like the square crop as well. The picture is beautifully filled from border to border. The expressions on their faces, their poses, everything communicates the moment of battle for me.

Nice picture of three sissies playing with dolls (pls don't give them my real name and adress; thank you very much!). Good choice of a square framing to enhance the composition in diagonal. Sense of power, strength, rudeness and competition. Very nice colours (thanks canon ;o) .

Hi Brendan.
Excellent how you caught the action, here.
Colours and contrast very good, too, as is the tight cropping.

WOW! and with a 50mm lens you must have on the damn pitch! I just love the expressions, the tension of the moment you've captured. This is a hight quality sports foto mate.
By the way, where's the ball? Surely it's a late tackle? : )

Hi Brendan,
Even considering nobody outside Australia would understand football Aussie rules, the photo is excellent to me, your focus is nice and the view is luminous, and I like how you got all the three of them on an action diagonal, with the muscles and expressions this makes a superb action shot.
Have a nice day,
Jean-yves

Hello Brendan, this is a great action pic. You have captured the moment brilliantly. I can feel the strength and agression in the players. It's also a good representation of Aussie Rules. There's no ball in sight - just go for the man!
