Milford Sound, a photo from Fiordland, South Island

Photographer's Note

A New Zealand trip wouldn’t be complete without seeing Milford Sound. Located on the southwest of South Island, it is in Fiordland National Park. The 16 kilometre length from the head of the fiord to the open sea is lined with sheer rock faces that soar 1,200 metres high from the water. It is often called one of the most beautiful places on Earth.
It’s actually a fiord. Milford Sound tops the rainfall meter of New Zealand. The annual rainfall is pegged at 6,813mm falling about 182 days of the year. The highest recorded rainfall on a single day is at 250mm. September, October, November and December are the wettest months in Milford Sound, with an average of 16 to 18 days of rainfall in a month. But don’t let that stop you from visiting! Milford Sound is even more magical when the rains come. It amplifies the already powerful waterfalls and creates hundreds of temporary ones which cascade down the cliff faces in a fury of power and beauty.

Nice view of the fjord even the weather wasn't so fine, good light management and perfect photo with the good detail of this red ship, well done, tfs.

Hi Malgo,

The red and white tour boat provides an excellent focal point. I might have lassoed it and sharpened a bit to compensate for the slight motion blur. The boat is perfectly placed on the 1/3 vertical axis point. It was hailing when I arrived in Milford Sound but the weather cleared with some sunny breaks. The bg at left does indeed resemble a Norwegian fjord. Tfs!

Hi Malgo
You do know the saying at Milford - if it isn't raining now it will be within an hour?
Hope that you went on the older style boat with its open decks that are great for photography.
This is a good photo that captures the dark mood of the place when the clouds come down.

Hello Malgo,
I remember this view with pleasure. The red and white boat is a strong eye-catcher in this dark scenery on a grey and rainy day. It looks very much like Norway on the opposite side of the globe. I hope you all had a great day on Saturday, in spite of the Milford Sound kind of weather. ;-)

Hello Malgo,
The weather was not in your favour but that seems to be par for the course judging by your note. The tour boat is nicely placed and adds a splash of colour to relieve the dark green tones of the rugged cliffs. It also serves to give scale to the composition.

Hello Malgo,
A very strong resemblance between this fjord and those in Norway, for example the Geirangerfjord: high rising walls and low-hanging clouds.
The boat adds a bit of a vivid colour on the picture.
I guess it must be awesome to make a boat tour on this fjord.
A pity you had no beautiful weather ... but as you wrote this place tops the rainfall meter in the country.

Hello Malgo,

Your notes paint an exciting picture to accompany your actual picture!
I feel a scary story, when I look at this!
The gap in the cliffs is strongly placed and from it, an eerie mist is emanating and seeping out onto the fjord. We can see that the focal boat is scurrying across the water before the mist affects it!

I'm sure it is a place which holds strong memories.

The length of the fjord is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the fjord Milford Sound. The presence of the boat has an effect of scale. Have a nice day.

Ya I think this is so typical landscape for NZ, so I can fully understand your intention, namely "this shot is essential for NZ". Thick fog and great composition with naice accent of ferry boat is so nice to see.

That is an impressive nature which you very well show on picture.
The sheer cliff is scaled by the red & white ferry, and the misty environment is absolutly like Norway's Fjords.
