Fires of Wharariki, a photo from Nelson, South Island

Photographer's Note

Wharariki bay is one of the most amazing places that I have photographed. We drove for and hour, then walked for 30 minutes to get to this beach in time for sunrise. When we arrived it was still dark, lit only by the moonlight. The huge beach had such a wild and mysterious atmosphere to it, accentuated by loads of big caves, sea arches and stacks all around. It is a remarkable place, if you are in NZ dont miss it.

This is magic and I think you know that;)
THe atmosphere couldn't be better. Everything was done correctly to achieve an amazing image. The powerful sky almost looks like some aurora!
Thanks for demonstrating the perfect shot! Just some more technical details would be appreciated!

Again superb lighting and incredible DOF.
How many hours do you stay along the beaches until it is the right moment to grab it ?
The Earth looks so pristine in your pictures ! Where are the humans ;-) Never a footstep in the sand!

You've got me on my chairs edge with your pre-announcement of the highlight of your trip and I have to admit I was a bit disappointed. Not that this image is not perfect, but I personally prefer the previous post. This here has a lot going on for it and I'm sure it was a much more spectcular moment to experience than the more tranquil setting of Arai Te Uru. Back to the merits of this one: I really like the dynamic fiery sky and how that motion is mirrored by the lines and patterns in the foreground. Also the silhouettes all have interesting forms, especially that arc is right out of the photographers dreams picture book. However for my taste there's a bit too much coming together at once, it simply beats me with all its light, shadows and power.. not exactly what I associate with a peaceful sunrise :-) But nevertheless a full smiley for the perfect execution, everything else is just my personal preference.

A pitty that there are no "useful" buttons on your replies to cyrrhus and cozy, some very interesting content in there. For an aspiring (landscape) photographer I'm way too often a lazy ass sleeping long and not going to great lenghts to find the shots, don't even talk about lugging a tripod along :-P. Thank you for your pictures, as they remind me how far a bit of dedication can bring ones results.

Fantastic shot! The colour is brilliant, and the balance through the frame of light and dark areas is great too. The reflection off the wet sand gives this a great look. Beautiful as usual!

My first impression were divided by two elements, Adam. One is certainly the extremely well worked out composition with wonderful colors/ light conditions and the other was: Oh s... he ruined it with a tilt to the left. But, I checked it out and it isn't tilted at all. For some reason the composition with that arch gives such a weight to the sea that it gives the optical illusion of a tilt. I probably would have worked a little bit on this to make a real tilt of 1-2 degrees to the right to give a correct optical illusion of straight horizon. Otherwise it is a great post with a lot of inspiration for my own work!

Fantastic atmospheric image. Movement of watewr and cloud, fiery red-orange and silhouette reflected on slick wet sand. Almost ethereal. Do The Gods live there? (; I stand by my opinion that you are one of the finest landscape photographers in Britain.

amazing Adam ,perfect composition and the detail is awesome ,a perfect sky and exposure on the sea creating that white whisp is superb .The wet sand ,ripples ,sillouettes and foreground pool just go together to make this one hell of a shot

The tone is tremendous .. I love the move from dark to bright across the image . but it is the motion in the clouds against the almost timeless stone that just grabs me .. If you don't mind sharing I'd love to know the exposure.

I did the same when I went there, arrived before sunrise, but unfortunately the sea mist was so thick, I did not see such spectacular colours in the sky, the wet sand and the position of the tidal pools give the perfect balance here.
