Photographer's Note

In early 1977 a tropical cyclone hit the New Hebrides group, one result of which was that the airstrip at Lamen Bay, on Epi, was damaged and put out of use. I was put in charge of a work party and machinery and we travelled up from Vila by landing barge. The strip was repaired in a couple of days The photo shows the test flight aicraft, which I flew in on, safely on the ground at Lamen Bay following a test landing.
The building in the background was the airport terminal building. It was made of split bamboo in the walls and palm leaf thatch for the roof. The floor was compacted earth. Inside was a chair which the local agent used to sit on when making out the load sheets, and a set of bathroom scales on which passengers and their luggage were weighed. Inter-island flying was an adventure every time in those days.
