Back to Argentina…

This is the northwest of Argentina, on the road between the cities of Salta and Cafayate.

The Andes run through all South America from south to north, but if in Patagonia they are marked by cold rainforests and lakes, here the mountains present a totally different scenario; with desert or semi-desert landscapes, very high plateaus, salt lakes, and a few fertile valleys.

Another point of interest is that here we almost over the Tropic of Capricorn line, but the arid scenery is not what possibly comes first to our minds when we think about tropical landscapes.

The weather in these regions is tough, with considerable temperature variation during the day, and can get very cold as you go higher in the mountains. Since there is very little rain, the erosion is mostly caused by the wind.

One final point is that some 50 kilometers away from this point, the city of Cafayate (which is in a very high valley), is the center of one of the wine producing regions in Argentina.

Again a triple feature, so two more views in the WS. :-)
