MILITARY THEATER, a photo from Distrito Federal, Center-West

Photographer's Note

Pedro Calmon Theater is part of a gigantic military complex of headquarters, it was inaugurated in 1968 and it is a project of Niemeyer, a communist who created this building that were inaugurated during the worst period of military dictatorship, that was ever hunting communists in the 1960's, maybe the project was made before and concluded in those days, named "Years of Lead".
This theater has 1200 seats and it located at side of Duque de Caxias avenue and even at side of a giant complex of barracks, something I will show you tomorrow, it is one of the most impressive structures in the town. The lateral side of the building remember me the shapes of the ramps of an hydroelectric dam, where the waters not used are poured.

O Teatro Pedro Calmon é parte do imenso complexo do Quartel General do Exército, foi inaugurado em 1968 e é um projeto de Niemeyer.
O teatro conta com 1200 lugares e fica ao lado da Avenida Duque de Caxias e do imenso complexo de quarteis, uma das estruturas mais interessantes de Brasília e que vou mostrar amanhã.
A lateral do teatro me lembra o aspecto das rampas por onde as usinas hidroelétricas despejam as águas que não usam.

Hi Jorge,
Very impressive structure. It has nice repeated motifs. Altogether I am really impressed with Brasilia and I will definitely try to remember it if I ever will be able to afford a trip to South America again. Lovely nocturnal photo. The light well turned into the star shape.

Hi Jorge,

I'm surprised to see such an elegant and artistic building in a military complex. A theatre in a military complex seems a strange thing to me. Niemeyer was ahead of his time with his designs. I agree that the left side looks like the spillway of a dam.

The modern shapes of this low building are very nice and look like waves in this flat landscape. Also the bluish lighting enhances this impression. Very well captured with good clarity and sharpness.

A very striking and special construction.
I really like the tropical garden under the white building.
Somehow this reminds me of certain buildings in Valencia (Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias)... but still different.
