When Pope John Paul II visited Brasília in 1991 the government asked for Niemeyer to create a monumental, but provisional, altar to a special gigantic mass in the Big Axis. When the Pope was gone the people became so impressed with the metallic structure they thought in a way to preserve it, the façade was removed to another spot, near the General Headquarters, and the rest of the building was built in the back part to complete the structure. This church was named Cathedral of Saint Mary of Military, Queen of Peace. It has the shapes of a military barrack and it is used by the army.
