SAINT ANN, THE TEACHER & MARY, a photo from Goias, Center-West

Photographer's Note

For those who knows well the baroque religious sculptures of Portugal and Brazil it is usual to find two types of pieces, one of them shows Saint Josef, using boots and other usual type of piece shows Saint Ann, the mother or Mary, teaching her the sacred texts. Usually this sculptures presents Saint Ann in a chair and the daughter at side, in most of them the teen Mary han an aspect of an adult in miniature, as here.
This is a sculpture made by Veiga Valle (1806-1874), the most famous master of baroque art in Goiás region. He produced baroque pieces, despite this style was out of fashion in Europe in those days, but Goiás was a so remote region and the new style took many time to reach the area. Some time ahead I will present more two special pieces linked with popular faith in central Brazil, pieces created by this same artist.

Para aqueles que estão familiarizados com a arte barroca em Portugal e no Brasil é fácil encontrar dois tipos de peças religiosas, uma delas mostra São José usando botas e outro tipo bem comum, mostra Santa Ana, a mãe de Maria, ensinando-a sobre as escrituras. Geralmente tais esculturas mostram Santana numa cadeira e ao lado a filha em pé, geralmente a adolescente Maria tem o aspecto de um adulto em miniatura, como aqui.
Essa escultura foi feita por Veiga Valle (1806-1874), considerado como o maior mestre de arte barroca em Goiás. Usava esse estilo, já fora de moda na Europa, pois Goiás era uma região muito remota e as novas modas demoravam a chegar até lá. Em breve mostrarei mais duas obras criadas pelo mesmo artista, essas ligadas à duas das maiores demonstrações de crença popular do centro do Brasil.

Hi Jorge,
Lovely sculpture and an interesting note. I have learned something new again. To be honest too often I pass through museums too afst to notice thighs which is so sad.
I suppose checking photos after a trip is a way to contemplate on some parts of the exhibition,

The tight frame is putting the statue in evidence. The point of view is showing the details of the religious statue. The light is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Hello Jorge,

Sculptures and their fashions are great indicators towards their dates.
This is an excellent sculpture, clearly photographed by you, to show the intricacies of the fabrics, the facial features and the colours.
You are right, the young Mary looks just as old as her mother, but that was a problem with this style, even babies looked old.

hello Jorge, Another charming piece of art from the museum. It is rather amusing that Mary looks like an adult in miniature.
I wonder if there are figures wearing real clothes, like in many colonial churches in South America.
