Belated Happy New Year Greetings, a photo from Rio de Janeiro, Southeast

This is a belated Happy New Year card to my friends on Trekearth from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Having returned from a 22-day working vacation on a cruise from San Juan, Puerto Rico to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I am just beginning to submit photos. I had been serving as a lecturer on board the elegant ship Crystal Symphony as she plied the waters of the Caribbean and the East Coast of Brazil. Boarding the ship in San Juan, we visited the Port of Scarborough, on the dual islands of Tobago and Trinidad; Devil's Island (where it was impossible to anchor and tender onto shore that particular day); and several ports in Brazil — Fortaleza, Recife, Salvador Bahia, Buzios and Rio. There was also a two-day visit to the incomparable waterfalls on the border between Brazil and Argentina.

The photographs I submit will generally be in chronological order, except the present photo, shot from the Symphony anchored in the port of Rio de Janeiro on New Year's Eve. The fireworks works were simultaneously fired from equidistant points on the Copacabana Beach and detonated at the same height. A bright point of light can be seen high above the horizon on the left side. It is the illuminated statue of Christ Redeemer on the peak of the mountain, Corcovado. The ship anchored in the bay of Rio between 8:00 pm and 2:00 am, then sailed to the resort city of Buzios for one day. It returned to Rio the following day, Jan. 2nd, and we disembarked on Jan 3rd. From there we flew down to the waterfalls of Iguazu two hours south of Rio. Finally, we returned to Rio on Jan. 5th and spent the next three days in that extraordinarily beautiful city.

I wish each of you a wonderful Sunday, but more than that, a Happy New Year. I hope very much that sanity will prevail among world leaders... although realistically, I keep thinking that the world is teetering on the edge of the abyss — while many of the world leaders are engaged in a leapfrog contest on the edge of that abyss.

Hello Bulent, and belated best wishes for 2016 to you.
Perfect timing as the spheres of exploding fireworks light up the dark night sky.
I like the composition with the bright lights sandwiched between the two dark areas.The reflected light across the water really completes the scene for me.

Better late than never ;-). Fireworks like these can be enjoyed anytime. The totally black surroundings enhance the effect of the red sparks and their reflections.

Perfectly captured the 10 fire-balls on great timing, Bulent.
Waterfront fireworks had a great shine in red over the surface.
The vessels moored looks relatively "small" gave scale to appreciate the size of the fired "balls".
Intriguing photography session, well done with an Iphone.

Not an easy shot to take and you've done exceptionally well. The 10 fireflowers of exploding red fireworks look nice and the effect is duplicated in the reflections. Good sharpness and punchy light contrasts against the dark night sky. Tfs!

You've been busy, sounds like a wonderful lifestyle upon which you live, not many of us can say we travel the world for our job. Makes me wonder how you got into that line of work! Good for you, sounds interesting.

And as Gert has mentioned on his critique, Fireworks can be enjoyed anywhere, anytime! Glad they were able to let you guys experience New Years away from home.

I don't think i've ever seen this exact formation of fireworks before, all lined up in a row and all the same shape and colour. Nice shot with the dark skies and dark water. Enjoy your day

I am looking forward to seeing your pictures, specially from Iguazu. have you been on both sides, I mean also in Argentina? Amazing view of the fireworks.

In ten days I go for holidays (unfortunately not working :)) to Cuba. I am very excited about this trip. I go all alone and plan to visit the whole island. When I was in Embassy for the Cuban visa they were rather surprised hearing it, even more than seeing me travelling by transsiberian.

Isn't it amazing how cheaper cameras will sometimes take photos as nice as more expensive ones? I love the colors and the reflections, your iPhone did well. Of course it wasn't the phone, as smart as it may be, that decided on the framing and moment, so you did well, too
