Relaxing, a photo from Sao Paulo, Southeast

Photographer's Note

After some weeks, this weekend I finally had the chance of taking some new photos. It was an uncommonly warm winter Saturday so I decided for the beach (Sao Paulo is some 60 kilometers away from the sea).

I opted for the city of Guaruja, which despite being to big and touristy for my own taste is near, has very good access from Sao Paulo and offers an important infrastructure in terms of bars, restaurants and lodging all year round.

So it was a good day at a the beach, which ended up relaxing while enjoying an impressive sunset.

This has been a winter with very little rains in the region, so the air is very dry and with a lot dust and particles… ideal conditions for those orange flaming sunsets (you will find bonus shots in the WS).

For this post I selected the photo that I find is closest to that relaxing feeling of being by the sea, with nothing more important to do than watching the sun set over the hills on the other side of the bay.

In this case I wanted to enhance the presence of the foreground, so I tried bracketing the image with different EVs ( -1.0 / 0 / and +1.0) and combined the results using layers. The same RAW original was used for this. (Original exposure was compensated at –2/3 EVs); conversion was done with ACR.

Additional processing on combined image (PS CS): Levels (+ soft light transition at 100%); USM (100 / 0.2 / 0); resize, frame, USM (100 / 0.2 / 0); and save for TE.

Raw Capture at ISO 100 – f8.0 – 1/640s @ 50 mm – CP filter.

Hi Carlos, I love your pov and composition. It feels almost as if you have decided to dine having put the table and chairs in this position to capture a romantic sunset evening. In essence the table and chairs are actually beach gear however used with a little imagination you have set the right tone and mood. Well done & tfs.

mi esposa dice que le gustaría estar sentada en esta playa ahora mismo. Yo también, je, je.
Tu foto es una maravilla, has resuelto con gran maestría la dificultad de esta luz tan fuerte y directa. Has creado un bello contraluz en el fondo de la costa montañosa, con el sol ardiendo en el cielo, y has conseguido ajustar la iluminación en el primer plano, ya que a pesar de los fuertes y bonitos brillos del sol en el agua, podemos ver los detalles de las personas, las sillas y la sombrilla.
Una imagen impresionante, que aumenta mi lista de favoritas.

A beautiful shot, Carlos. It is a really restful image - would be nice to be relaxing on that sand watching the sun go down and listening to the surf. You've exposed it well, despite the difficult contre jour conditions.

Quelle chance d'avoir un hiver ensoleillé, notre été sur la région parisienne est particulièrement pluvieux en ce moment, nous sommes plus proches du mois de novembre que du mois d'août.
Votre photo adoucit notre peine, ce soleil qui brille de mille feux, réchauffe nos yeux. Le reflet qui vient jusqu'à la plage est très agréable à regarder.

Oi Carlos,

Que cartao postal esta foto! E tudo o que voce quiz passar e mais! Ate eu que nao sou muito fa de praia fiquei com vontade de sair correndo para uma. Os tons de dourado e a luz sao fantasticos. A composico nota 10. E o trabalho com a superposicao de imagens deu um resultado mito bonito. No canto esquerdo em baixo e que me parece que tem alguma distorcaozinha como se a simetria das ondas e da area estivesse um pouco quebrada. Sei la meu monitor hoje ta uma M, e meu computador ta dando problemas...

The setting is superb & so is your PP...The warm tones are excellent & so is the graophism formed by the diagonal lines of the waves & the sand. Big bright sun exudes warmth. Wonderful one, but small nitpick about the halo over the hills.

Nos muestras una imagen con una fuerza arrolladora, nadie puede poner en duda que la luz es la protagonista, es muy interesante y bien elaborada, aunque yo habría descentrado un poco mas el Sol y el primer plano de la sombrilla, realmente es un lugar idílico para sentarse y disfrutar de uno de los momentos más bellos del día, gracias por mostrarnos un pedacito mas del mundo.

Comom me gustaria estar ahi tomando el sol al bordo del mar sobre todo que el mes de agosto era muy frio y con lluvia - me estraño para el verano.
El imagen es muy dinamico gracias al formato vertical que da importancia al sol y al primer plano. Me gustan tambien la holas.

Beautiful relaxing image. I love the inclusion of the foreground tableau with enough detail to see what it is thanks to your PP. To do this do you need to select & delete the "wrong" part of one image and paste it over the "right" one or is there a more satisfactory way of doing it?

O titulo reflete absolutamente o conteudo desta foto.
Ultimamente eu estive tentando fazer fotos contra o sol com a minha nova maquina fotografica. O resultado foi catastrofico. O sol domina tudo e o resto se perde na escuridao. Fiquei absolutamente fascinado vendo esta sua foto e a sua explicacao detalhada de como voce conseguiu este efeito me encoraja bastante em continuar, mas com a sua tecnica refinada.

Preciosa foto del atardecer, un sitio para relajarse un poco, captaste muy bien el sol con su luz reflejada en el mar y aunque esta en el medio de la foto creo que combinaste muy bien la localizacion del paragua para hacer un poco de contraste. Me gusta mucho la silueta.

The oranges and the golds are an asset to this frame. The fact that you have the silouette effect, you still manage to get some colors on the umbrella and chairs, very well done!
