Photographer's Note

This is the Church "Nossa Senhora da Piedade", the first church built in the state of Santa Catarina, in 1745, November, 18.
Its architecture is portuguese, and we can see many churches like this in this state, mostly colonized by the people from Azores.

This place is today a little fishermen's village from the main place "Governador Celso Ramos", just beside the island of Santa Catarina, where is Florianópolis, in the southern Brazil. (The island where is Florianópolis is just on the other side of the bay).

The first founders were whale hunters who came in 1741 with a 12 years contract to explore. At that time Brazil was still a colony of Portugal. Their business helped the village to grow up untill they found some difficulties to found and catch the whales around.
Today the few fishermen work to catch shrimp and fish, and I am glad to tell the we still can watch some whales cruising the open sea in the right season.
