Photographer's Note

Continuing with my theme from my Salkantay Trek in Peru...

Here we are on Day 2, the longest day and most grueling day. We are hiking up and around Salkantay Mountain, which is seen here on the right.

Due to the very high altitudes here, at approx 14000-15000 feet, many people in our group experienced altitued sickness. My poor girlfriend Tosca, as some of you already know of her, experienced it too :(
She vomited 4 times during this leg of the trek and had hard times breathing. The oxygen levels at this elevation are approx 30 - 35% less than at sea level.

But the trooper that she is, she made it through. Two other people in our group of 11 had to take the horses up as their bodies gave up, but they both hiked the following day.

For me personally I was ok, only experienced a minor headache. I was one of the lucky ones i guess.

I'll add a WS photo of Tosca..she's looking tired but i'm proud of her. The WS photo was taken soon after she was physically sick, trying her hardest to reach the top of the steep hill you see in the main posted photo. She made it :)

Hope you don't mind the main photo as its shot directly into the sun, but it should give you an idea of the landscape.
