Upsetting People at the Cemetery, a photo from Lima, South

Photographer's Note

I wanted to continue showing more photo's of the amazing cemetery in Lima.

This is the first time in my life I've ever seen a car in the middle of the cemetery like this, trust me, this isn't the Parking Lot!

The rusted old car was just sitting here, so I thought it would be best to take advantage of it. But as soon as I began taking my photo's I was approached by a couple of older gentlemen who were not too pleased with me.

Perhaps it was their car? If so, I can understand the men getting upset because as you can see I photographed with with my extreme wide angle lens. You know what that means! I was actually only about half a foot from the front bumper, really really close to it to get the perspective I wanted. Perhaps I was too close to the car for somebodies comfort.

I'll add photo's in the WS too. One of them is directly from behind the car, which has better overall lighting than this photo, but I chose this as the primary post because of the front car view.

Quel étonnant cimetière....qui sert même de cimetière de voitures apparemment! Vraiment très curieux. Ton très grand angle contribue à rendre cette photo très très originale. Les photos du WS ne manquent pas d’intérêt non plus!

Hello Craig,

I can't believe the men were worried about the car, this doesn't look to be capable of moving! It does, however, have a quirky character with one 'seeing' eye and the others springing out like lose monocles!

Fine f/g attention and a great sense of depth.

I have never seen a cemetery like this, before; we learn so much on TE.

Hello Craig - The addition of the car adds oomph to the shot. I see exactly what you mean about the light in the WS shot but I much prefer this composition. The skewed perspective has exaggerated the angles has given the composition incredible strength and lines that pull the eye. I wonder why you upset the locals? Perhaps the car has special significance.... a final resting place for somebody's ashes perhaps? Ghoulish thought! Warm regards Rosemary

Wow - this is an amazing find and really creative wide-angle photography. The distorted car looks so out of place in this unusual cemetery. A fabulous shot even if you did upset the locals!

heheheh I can just imagine these old boys going off their heads at you, the heathen with the camera :) Good on you, I'd have run for cover, crying for my mamma. You're right about the WS having better light, but you just had to get the front of the car. The wide angle works so well, I love the exaggerated perspective and the converging lines. Top job, and a pretty funny story, now that you're away from that spooky place.

A very clever way to take a picture in a cemetery ! Nice wide angle view, and the car (the wreck, I would say) is a good way to fill the image. Strange scene indeed !

hi Craig, an interesting one here. The ultra wide composition is done the trick here. Like the distortorsion a lot :) ... Actually this distortion helped this composition a lot. The abandoned old car in middle is a nice point of attraction here with the interesting cemetery at back. A superb presentation using a low POV.

People can get very upset if you take too much notice in their prize possessions:-) Great capture of this rather strange looking sight. Excellent point of view and fine technical presentation. I like the way the rows of tombs seem to be falling in on the car as if they are about to crush the life out of it.

a stunning visual shot this and as quirky as it seems gives us a glimpse of a different way of life and is strangely Warhol-artish. Not sure we will see any other TE members posting something like this so top marks for originality.
Perhaps the guys thought you might damage their car!

Hi Craig,
Thanks for sharing more shots of this amazing city of the dead, as its so unlike any necropolis I've ever been in. The tighly packed white marble walls give it a somewhat Claustrophobic feel, just like a real city! As for the car, it makes a fantastic addition to the scene, and it does kind of belong there. The car looks dead, like its life has passed and now its here to spend the rest of its days among the others who have passed. I wonder this car even still work?

Beautifully seen shot making a very strange contrast, but one that seems just right.

C'est vrai que pour donner cet effet de lentille, tu devais être très près de la voiture. Par contre, il faut aussi penser que cela pouvait être la voiture d'un des morts qui lui sert pour sortir la nuit et aller retrouver ses amis zombies.

Hi Craig,
This makes agood combination with your previous one. So the size of each grave is is easier to figure out on this.
The car looks rather gloomy. As is would think: I'm not dead yet, but already feel more comfortable at a cemetery than among the younger ones.

Weird cemetery! Weird situation (with that car there!)! I've seen some reports on TV where they showed some cemeteries like that here in Brazil... they don't please me a bit (I've seen worse examples down here)!
By the other hand, as usual, your picture of that place is great with special regards to the use of the wide angle lens, chosen pov and composition!

Hi Craig,
alone the cemetery like this looks unique and completely different from the cemeteries in Europe.But the old,abandoned car is a great addition to the scene-it´s like the resting place for it.
It´s really cool shot,especially seen through your wide-angle lens,which gives unique feel to the scene!
PS.Also your second image in WS is superb.You alone between the tombs.For me-great atmospheric shot!

I really wonder what the purpose the presence of this car in the cementery means to those men? Obviously the car is not fit for traffic any more. Maybe it belonged to one of the residents of the cemetery?
Anyway it makes for quite a morbid scene, enhanced strongly by the wide angle lens. It is like a scene out of a Louis Bunuel film.

That is an amazing cemetery in Lima. It is an impressive architecture and there even is car possibly for one of the dead to drive off ... Could be some Indian belief. Who knows? Excellent POV and execution. Well done

A very nice find. From the thumbnail, this looked like another abandoned car, but from your note I surmise that it works? Scary thought!
