Photographer's Note
This is a female Andean condor (Vultur gryphus). The name derives from the Quechua kuntur. Condors' wing spread is about 3 m, the second largest in the Western Hemisphere, second only to the wandering albatross (3.5 m).The Andean condor reaches sexual maturity at 5 to 6 years, mates for life, and can live for more than 50 years. The condor has a large territory and can fly up to 250 km per day in search of carrion (generally deer or cattle)and is an intermittent eater, going several days without food. Once airborne, it generally stops flapping its wings and simple soars on updraughts. One condor was recorded flying over 5 hours without beating its wings! A remarkable bird!

Hi Michael,
It's difficult to get a good sharp photo of a flying bird, but this one has come out well. I presume you used a telephoto lens to bring it up close. The dark condor stands out well against the light background. Placing the bird on the left gives it a dynamism that would be lost if it was in the centre.
