Photographer's Note

Day 5 - At 8:00hs we were ready to leave the hotel in Arequipa to go to the Cannon Colca. The guide arrived 45min late. Our group for the 2 days tour on Cannon Colca was of 9 people, a very nice group with a sympathetic guide and driver. This tour was the highlight of our trip to Peru. All the colors and beauty I saw on the road made me want to stop every minute to take pictures... A private tour and more time would be the ideal for that...
To go from Arequipa to Canon Colca we took highway 109 going north, 130km - 4 hours drive of an amazing scenery landscape that I enjoyed from the front seat of our van. The first kilometers are of a rocky landscape full of cactus that starts to change just before the Salinas and Agua Blanca National Preserve. At this point where the water is more abundant due to the melting snow coming from the top of the surrounding Vulcan’s (Chachani, El Misti and Pichu- Pichu), the cactus give place to kinds of low grass: the yareta (Azorella sp.), queñual (Polylepis sp.)and kcapo (Parastrephia lepidophylla), used by the locals as fuel and as pasture for the animals. A river and many small lakes in the region make it an ideal place for the vicunas, this typical wild South American camelids which was declared endangered specie in 1960 (see WS for more about the vicunas and Salinas). Going up we arrive at a cross road to PUNO-CUSCO where we made a stop for a coca tea before passing the highest point on the trip about 4.800m above see level. The last part of the road before arriving to Chinvay is the Bofedales de Toqra region which is filled with alpacas and alpacas' farms.

Unfortunately I lost all other pictures from this part of the trip and the colca cannon... So that is as much I'll be able to share with you about this place...
