Photographer's Note

Day 7 - Going from Arequipa to Puno the bus makes a stop in Juliaca, which is the region's largest city and capital of the San Román province at the altitude of 3825 meters above sea level. It is located in the Collao Plateau and close to Lake Titicaca and to the ruins of Sillustani. Cattlebreeding creates a strong trade in leather goods and textiles; also wool trading is big in this area. The city looks like a big market with sales vendors, as the one in the picture, everywere. Looking at the kind of shanty town architectural aspect of the houses and the unpaved chaotic dirty streets (we can see plastic bags and bottles everywhere even on the fields few kilometers from the town) it's hard to imagine that the city is home to the department's main airport, the Inca Manco Capac International Airport and it's an important economic center to the region. In the workshop you can see more of this big market. More about the city next post...
