The Road Goes On, a photo from Malaga, Andalucia

Photographer's Note

Here is another photo taken up on the hill fort I visited in Spain.I tried to capture the on going road snaking along the flowing countryside swerving into the mountains.The road crosses a thirds line and the horizon does as well.I sharpened and increased the saturation slightly on this photo.I did this in Photofiltre.

Hello Miles,

Another well composed picture from your Spanish trip.

The snaking road is a good lead in to the picture and the soft colours of the browns and blues work well together.

Is this a valley artificially flooded to create a reservoir?

I think that a bit of tweaking of the levels might give a bit more impact.

Hello Miles,

This is a well thought out photograph, well composed along classical lines, as you have mentioned in your note. The fine composition makes it pleasing to the eye and I like how the curving road snakes toward the lake, drawing the viewer deeper into the picture.

If there is any negative comment, it is that the picture does lack some "punch". And Peter has not only shown you the reason but has also done a fine workshop to address that minor failing. I'm not really conversant with Photofiltre but what Peter has done in Photophiltre could also be done in any of the versions of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and, no doubt, in many other image editing softwares.

Still worth deux points, Miles!

P.S. Now, you did state in your introduction that you are looking for contructive critiques. I assume that also means that you are looking for general constructive advice. Well, this site is a bit like any other walk of life: give and you will receive. Just as I'm sure you love to read nice things (and sometimes not so nice things) about your pictures, others love critiques on their pictures too. After all, we all love to be noticed! And, what's the first thing you do when you see that someone has written a critique on one of your pictures? Yes, you go and have a look at his/her pictures too!

I'm not in favour of what has been called "backslapping - i.e. just writing nice things about others' pictures just so they will do the same for you, but there's no doubt that making critiques on others pictures will definitely let you become noticed here. And that's not a bad thing if you really want to learn about better photography. Also, if you have the time, it's just wonderful to browse some of the wonderful pictures here and try to get some insight into the inspiration that some of the wonderful photographers have!
