The monastery of Geghard
On the right portal S. Astvatsatsin.

Geghard is a medieval monastery in the Kotayk province of Armenia, being partially carved out of the adjacent mountain, surrounded by cliffs. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While the main chapel was built in 1215, the monastery complex was founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator at the site of a sacred spring inside a cave.

This is a fine close view of one of the many Armenian churches and monasteries in this typical style. All of them are not listed by the UNESCO but I think they should all collectively be regarded a world heritage. This photo has a wonderful clarity and a very well captured texture of the stones.

Il est beau et impressionnant ce monastère. Cela ne semble pas très facile d'y entrer avec cette porte fermée sur le monde extérieur. J'aime beaucoup le cadrage ainsi que le rendu de la texture de la pierre.

I saw many Armenian style buildings in eastern Turkey, the former homeland of the Armenians. Good sharpness and bull mounting the wrong end of the cow is an amusing although probably unintended addition. Tfs!
