Photographer's Note
My favorite building in Nevsky Prospekt was Eliseev Emporium. I passed near it many times but I do not understand why I didn't get inside. Stupid of me, I saw the photos of the shop interior and it is magnificent.
Elisseeff Emporium in St. Petersburg is a large retail and entertainment complex, including a famous food hall, constructed in 1902–1903 for the Elisseeff Brothers. Located at 56 Nevsky Prospekt, the complex consists of three buildings, although the corner one is the structure that is referred to as Elisseeff’s store or shop (Елисеевский магазин). Designed by architect Gabriel Baranovskii it is one of the most striking examples of St. Petersburg Art Nouveau architecture, although at the time of its construction the building was considered controversial.
In 1881, revolutionary Narodniks built a tunnel under Malaya Sadovaya Street from the basement of that building, preparing to plant mines to assassinate Czar Alexander II. By March 1 the preparations were complete, but the Czar did not pass that way on that day (and was instead killed by other means).]
The architect managed to incorporate some parts of older buildings in this structure, made the entire building appear as if it were one giant shop window. Over one half of the façade consists of a single arch. The arch is a giant stained glass window that opens several floors to the street. The Art Nouveau stained glass contrasts with the granite surface of the building adorned by allegorical sculptures of Commerce, Industry, Science and Arts by Estonian sculptor Amandus Adamson.
As you can see, there are well known shops here Starbucks coffee, United Colors of Benetton, written in Latin script but often there is just transcription to Russian alphabet and it looks quite funny.

Hello Malgo,
All the façades seen in this photo are beautiful and with wonderful ornaments and details, lit by an appealing sunlight, but the one of the corner steals the show. Very well captured.

Hello Malgo,
This is really a fantastic building filled with beautiful art nouveau details, but it looks a bit lonely with much less interesting buildings on the sides. On the other hand those buildings' relative dullness makes the Eliseev Emporium look even more glorious. The three photos are all very sharp and perfectly exposed and show us the building from different angles.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Malgo,
No wonder you liked it, it is a very attractive building in every way. Its design, its windows, its sculptures, all combine to create this effect.
Your w/s, closer, confirms its beauty.
Perhaps you didn't enter because the weather was so nice!
Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi dear Malgo,
What a shame that you never actually ventured into this huge emporium - but never mind - you will be back again soon in Saint Petersburg I am sure!
You have written a fascinating and very informative note and shown us three excellent photographs of this most impressive building with its massive arched window. Viewed at full size, these photographs are all of exquisite quality with perfect exposure, fine colours and exceptional details and sharpness.
Fabulous!
Kindest Regards,
John.
P.S. And thank you for the brilliant little "window" movie!

Hi Malgo,
You have captured well the movement of the cars. The point of view of view is showing the details of the architecture of the buildings. The light is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.

Clearly a very important avenue in Saint Petersburg.
The corner building, the Emporium, looks impressive with giant statues on different places.
Next time you will have to take a look inside :)

Hello Malgo,
This building really is a gem. The details, including the statues and the iron work are beautiful. I also like the yellow building to the left. This looks like a very attractive street overall. I'm often in Starbucks, so it's very convenient, too. :-)

Hi Malgo
St Petersburg looks to be a stylish and elegant city. The Starbucks at left blends into the urban landscape here for a change. Excellent sharpness, color and saturation & I like the angled pov showing 2 facades. Tfs!

Ciao Malgo
vari elementi di questa architettura mi ricordano palazzi parigini.
Notevoli i dettagli e le sculture che lo decorano.
Belle anche le foto del ws, un servizio completo, o quasi, visto che non sei entrata.
Saluti
Carlo

Malgorzata, that historical building located on the Nevsky prospect can be compared somewhat to the galleries Lafayette in Paris. It houses retail shops for instance. Statues are decorating the facades. Magnificent blue sky, good light.

Hello Malgo,
If the inside is as pretty as the outside, I'd say, yes, you missed an opportunity. Well, maybe reason enough to visit again. 👍🏻👍🏻

MT
