Photographer's Note

All that remains of the Bwllfa Colliery, Cwmdare, Aberdare (1856-1957). The metal work on the right would have stood at the top of the headgear on which the winding wheels would have turned. The wheel and the structure to the left is where the original downcast shaft stood which has now been filled in and capped.

In the midground is the reclaimed spoil tip, the waste from 100 years of coal mining. Just beyond it would have stood a small terrace of miners' cottages and a brick works.

The escarpment in the background is Craig-y-Bwllfa which shows the southernmost expanse of the glacier from the last ice age in the United Kingdom. It now forms part of the Dare Valley Country Park.

Hi Gerwyn,very interesting post, it needs to read the note to understand better, in fact just few things remains, the last witness of glorious past of this place, a symbol of economic boom of the last 2 centuries. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano
