Photographer's Note

I was trying out my new Nikon D80, and on our way home from dinner spotted this violinist playing on the street. He let me take his photograph. At first I tried to use aperture-preferred for the ambient light, but that didn't work, so I switched to auto and used the built-in flash, something I rarely do. But in this case it worked. The flash picked up the face and the violin while leaving the background dark (it helps that he was standing in front of a black wall and was wearing a black coat).

Technical: I cloned out a small white spot (no idea what it was). Mainly I used the 81 warming filter at 25%, which brought out the flesh tones nicely. (The standard flash produces a cold light, which is one of the problems I have with it.) No other changes; the original image has the chiaroscuro effect I was aiming for.
