Photographer's Note
2007 celebrated 100 years of surf lifesaving in Australia during the Year of the Surf Lifesaver.
Surf lifesavers are trained volunteers who patrol our beaches on weekends and public holidays during the swimming season. Lifeguards provide beach safety to local government or other land managers (such as resort or amusement park operators) and patrol seven days a week – although this depends on location.
They are recognised by their red and yellow uniform. Red and yellow flags mark the area patrolled by surf lifesavers and lifeguards. They mark the safest place to swim at the beach, because if the surf lifesavers or lifeguards can’t see you – they can’t save you.
For one hundred years, Australia’s trained surf lifesavers have been keeping our beaches safe. In that time, they have rescued more than 530,000 people and provided first aid to a million others. Of SLSA’s 130,000 members, more than 37,000 actively patrol our beaches.
Australian Surf Lifesaving
Here, at the end of the year, the surf was very rough and wild, the sky totally overcast....few people ventured out.

Hello Nichola,
The weather has certainly been horrible this last week for beachgoers, happening at the very worst possible time of year. I am going to Maroochydore all of next week, but I doubt it will be worth my while. Our annual holiday has been grey, windy and not wet enough to be substantially improving to our catchments. I like this view however, and the lifesavers look prominent in their familiar colours. I took my previous photo on the beach about in the middle of the frame, in the distance, looking back to where you are standing. Good luck with the New Year.
Matt
