The coast of North Carolina is protected by a series of barrier islands, some of which are called the Outter Banks. The Gulfstream pushed early shipping traffic in toward the coast and violent storms in league with the shoal waters caused the area to come to be known as "The Graveyard of the Atlantic".

Today it is beautiful country that hoasts millions of tourists during the summer months. The activities for which the area is know are the beaches, the fishing and the scuba diving.
