When Venice colonised the island in 13th c, they found resistance on the Lasithi plateau, so they decided to pull out vegetation,to starve people. Deserted by force, the plateau became a swamp. But they soon lacked food themselves,so,they cultivated the place again, using windmill to pump the water and irrigate the fields.
2007, some of these nice windmills are used in places, some are in ruins, or are renovated as open-air museums.
Modern wind turbines have sprung up too!
